Hosting a Florida State FIRST Lego League
Qualifying Tournament

On behalf of all Florida FIRST LEGO® League teams and staff, we would like to thank all of the dedicated coaches and volunteers for undertaking the challenge of putting on a Florida State Qualifying Tournament. With your help, these tournaments become a reality! FLL is truly fortunate to work with committed individuals and organizations that share our goal of inspiring the next generation to celebrate science and technology.  As an FLL event coordinator, we commend you for assuming an active role in the development of today’s youth into tomorrow’s workforce.

FIRST Lego League allows the State Partner to determine how teams advance from a qualifier to the state. In order to maximize the number of teams getting into qualifying tournaments and to minimize complaints, we have come up with a set of guidelines a Florida State Qualifying Tournaments must follow.

Qualifying Tournament Guidelines

·        Tournament must be listed on this web site.

·        Tournament must be open to all teams.

·        Selection criteria :

bullet

The selection process will be done from this web site.

bullet

Teams will be selected on a first come first serve basis.

bullet

Priority will be given to teams that have not registered for a qualifying tournament.

·        Minimum of 16 teams.

·        FLL Scoring Sheets and rubrics must be used.

·        Final scores for the tournament including all categories for all teams must be sent to lmelnik@cfl.rr.com If a Gracious Professionalism aspect of the judging moved teams around after totaling scores, please include that information also. We will not make these scores public at any time; your tournament may choose to publish the scores. If this list is not received, the qualifying teams will not be entered in the Florida State Championship.

Advancement

The top 20% teams from the tournament are chosen to advance to the state tournament by a combined score of Robot Design, Research, Teamwork and Performance giving each an equal value of 25%. Gracious Professionalism adjustments should be made where they are needed.

The host team for a qualifying event will be given a spot at the regional tournament of their choice if and only if the kids on the hosting team work at the tournament. This is to encourage teams to host tournaments while avoiding any impropriety in judging. Only one team can be given a position for each tournament.

It is highly recommended that the hosting team participate in a QT before the regional. This allows teams to practice before they meet to compete at the regional level. Next year this will be mandatory.

In the event the state tournament does not fill all spots, the scores from the qualifying tournaments will be used to invite additional teams until the tournament is full.
